Technological proliferation and innovation in both hardware and software are expected to be the key factors driving the growth. Add to this the emergence of new markets and a substantial increase in audience every year, and you have a rapidly progressing industry at hand. What does the future hold? How is Pakistan’s gaming landscape evolving? What opportunities and challenges exist for entrepreneurship in the gaming industry?

Profiles of Panelists

Mr. Abbas Saleem Khan - CEO, Optera Digital

Mr. Khan is a Pakistani Transmedia Specialist who has also produced animation and VFX. His work ranges from working with Expert Systems to design Pakistan’s first Computerized National Identification Card (2000) to working in Trango Interactive as Art Director for games such as Tomb Raider, SpongeBob:SquarePants, Afterburner, and Death Jr. 2. After Trango, Mr. Khan worked on developing social and mobile games. Some of his games have been featured on the App Store, Windows Store and Google Play Store. He went on to Unicorn Black where he supervised the production of Seasons 3 and 4 of Burka Avenger. He is currently the CEO of Optera Digital, a company that uses Transmedia, AR/VR, Choice Architecture and Gamification for clients such as the World Bank, UNDP, as well as FMCGs tackling issues such as Gender Parity, Youth Employment, CVE, and Public Health.

Mr. Faraz Ahmed - CEO, Turbo Labz

Mr. Ahmed is in the business of delivering large-scale social free-to-play mobile games that compete head to head in polish and player adoption with the most successful titles across the planet. He manages a broad spectrum of production and engineering aspects and his professional experience spans Silicon Valley, Middle East and South Asia. His C-level positions have been at a startup business scale and he thus has a sleeves rolled-up and hands-on approach with most activities. He is currently the Co-Founder and CEO of Turbo Labz, a gaming technology now in partnership with Huuuge Games, where the social multiplayer PvP platform is live and powering the global mobile chess community. Mr. Ahmed holds a BSc in Computer Science from Eastern Connecticut State University. 

Mr. Murad Akhter - CEO, Tintash 

Mr. Akhter has over seven years of experience in product management and software development in Silicon Valley’s high-tech industry. Prior to Tintash, he worked at Apple Computer on flagship products such as the company’s first line of 64-bit systems as well as its transition from PowerPC chips to Intel’s multi-core processors. He later worked on jukebox and VOIP applications for the Ultra-Mobile PC platform at Microsoft before starting Tintash in 2007. Mr. Akhter graduated from Stanford University with an MS and BS in Computer Science.

Dr. Suleman Shahid - Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, School of Science and Engineering, LUMS, and Director, LUMS Learning Institute

Dr. Shahid’s research focuses at the intersection of design, technology and wellbeing with applications to assistive technologies to enhance the quality of life of persons with disabilities, and persons with mental health conditions, learning technologies for children (child-computer interaction) and human computer interaction for development (HCI4D/ICT4D). Since 2009, he has been offering consultancy and training services in the areas of service design and user experience (UX) design and strategy. Dr. Shahid received his PhD in Human-computer Interaction in 2011 from Tilburg University, the Netherlands and PDEng (Professional Doctorate in Engineering) in 2007 in User System Interaction programme from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands.
