Is LUMS SOE offering a degree in teacher training?
The MPhil in Education Leadership and Management is NOT a teacher-training program. It consists of coursework, along with an interactive field component that involves a significant amount of research-based practice in educational organisations partnered with the School.
How long does it take to complete the program?
The MPhil Education Leadership and Management is a 2-year-long programme.
How many credits are required for the degree?
The MPhil Education Leadership and Management degree is a 36 credit hours programme completed over 4 semesters.

This program opens opportunities for individuals belonging to different academic and professional backgrounds aspiring to become educational leaders, administrators, and/or policy reformers.
What kind of financial assistance is available for the programme?
LUMS School of Education aims to admit students with a diverse set of personal, professional and educational experiences to its inaugural class, irrespective of their financial circumstances. Admission to the program will be on the basis of merit alone. Through a generous grant from Babar Ali Foundation, up to 100% of comprehensive merit and need-based financial aid scholarships are available for all admitted students.
Do I need to be employed in a school/education setting while enrolled in the programme?
No. This program does not require current employment in education.
How many students are in each cohort?
There are around 40-50 students in each cohort every year.
What is the expected average age of incoming students?
The average age of incoming students will range between 25 and 40 years.

What opportunities are available to gain work experience?
The MPhil Education Leadership and Management programme course includes a research-intensive Practicum, a semester-long ‘residency’ in which students work full time in an educational organisation partnered with the School of Education to investigate a research question of their choice. The program will also include methods coursework that is contingent on students’ field activities to understand the development, and implementation of research instruments. Through these different engagements with ‘live’ educational environments and situations, students will also find reasonable opportunity to interact with potential employers.

I already have an MA Degree. Can I apply to LUMS?
Yes. We encourage candidates who already have a Masters degree or any other graduate degree to apply. These can be from a variety of disciplines, such as engineering, business or law.
What are my chances of getting a job after I have completed my MPhil Education Leadership and Management Programme from LUMS?
LUMS SOE has a substantial partnerships network where students will be doing field placement and residency exercises. Our partners include government institutions, private, non-profit and donor organizations. LUMS SOE is explicitly looking to secure job placements for its graduates at competitive market salaries. We are confident that LUMS SOE MPhil graduates will be in high demand in the education reform, entrepreneurship, edtech, research and policy job circles.
Moreover, over the years LUMS graduates have established themselves as highly marketable individuals with a diverse set of relevant skills. Our SOE graduates will also be adequately skilled for both the professional environment as well as undertaking entrepreneurial ventures. Our Career Development Office provides substantial assistance to students in seeking placements for internships as well as regular jobs. I don't have a degree in education. Will this impact my chances for admission?
Prior direct experience in education is not essential, however an understanding of your interest in this programme should be clear. Education is a field with multi-disciplinary overlaps. We welcome applications from candidates with a variety of professional and academic backgrounds. Candidates from any background with an interest in the field of education and potential to learn can apply.
What supporting documents should I send with my form?
May I apply using the paper based application and send paper materials?
No, the application form must be submitted online. Supporting materials are submitted by mail or in person. Electronic submission of applications allows for faster processing and for candidates to stay informed on the status of their application.
May I request for the application fee refund?
No, application fee is non- refundable.
What if my supporting documents didn’t reach LUMS on time?
You need to send us your supporting documents on or before the deadline advertised. If you can demonstrate that this took an extra day reaching LUMS, we will consider the merits of your claim. We strongly recommend you plan for delays if you are sending materials by mail.

No, there is no age restriction for admission to the MPhil Education Leadership and Management Programme.
Can I transfer credits from another graduate programme?
Transfer of credits from another programme to the SOE MPhil Education Leadership and Management Programme is not allowed. All admitted students regardless of having an advanced degree will begin the programme as a first year student.
Can I defer admission?
In truly exceptional circumstances the Admissions Committee may grant a deferral. All requests should be made in writing and will be reviewed on a case to case basis.
For how long I can defer my admission?
An applicant can defer his/her admission for 2 years by informing LUMS admissions office before the deadline.

How many letters of recommendation are required?
Two letters of recommendation are required by the office. You may submit a third letter of recommendation, if you prefer.
Whom should I ask to submit a recommendation on my behalf?
We recommend that at least one letter should be from a faculty member or an academic who has had reasonable opportunity to evaluate your academic aptitude. A second letter should be from a work or internship setting where your recommender can speak to your professionalism, work ethic and a project that you worked on with him or her. If you do not have any work or internship experience, but have volunteered in your community or at a school, you can ask for a letter from that organization. We discourage letters from individuals who only know you in a personal capacity (such as friends, family members, etc).
Is there any format for recommendation letters?
You must provide the online form for a LUMS Letter of Recommendation to each person who is writing your letter. The LUMS Letter of Recommendation format has specific questions which the recommender must address in the letter. The format is available through the online admission application under the recommendation letter section.
Do I need to wait until my recommender has submitted his/her letter to submit my application?
No, you should submit your online application within the stipulated deadline, and request your recommenders to give you the signed letters in sealed envelopes well in time so you can submit them along with the supporting materials of your application in person or via postal mail. All of this must be completed before the deadline.
Do you require any entrance test for admission to the MPhil Education Leadership and Management Programme?
The LUMS SOE requires a GRE/ GMAT test score.
What is the last date to take GRE (General) for admission for the session commencing September 2020?
The deadline to take the GRE (General)/ GMAT is March 10, 2020.
What is the minimum score required in GRE/ GMAT for admission?
There is no minimum required score. We plan to look at the entire application so that each candidate is evaluated in a holistic manner. A low GRE/ GMAT score should not be a deterrent to applying.
For how long are the GRE/GMAT scores valid?
GRE/GMAT scores are valid for five years. GMAT/GRE taken five years before the admission deadline will not be considered valid.

Our GRE/ GMAT reporting code from ETS and Pearson’s is 0679.
What if I don't have my GRE/ GMAT scores by the application submission deadline?
GRE/ GMAT score is compulsory for submission of online application. You must submit/mail the copy of unofficial GRE/ GMAT score report as soon as you take the test. However, the official GRE/GMAT scores can be submitted later.
Do you interview all applicants?
A merit ranking for interview short listing is established on academic performance, work experience (if any) and admission test scores of candidates. Those who qualify this comparative ranking are called for interview.
What kinds of questions are asked during the interview?
The interview is a key indicator of the potential of MPhil candidates to assume responsibility for advanced education decision-making, particularly in the Pakistani environment. During the interview the Admissions Committee tries to assess the applicant's leadership abilities, communication skills, aptitude for research thinking, and a level of awareness about Pakistani education. Final decision regarding admission is taken after the interview.
Is work experience compulsory?
No, work experience is not compulsory to apply and anyone with a clear understanding of their interest in education will be considered.

How will you notify me regarding a decision on my application?
Admission decision will be communicated through courier service; however, you can also check your application status through your online account. Regretfully, we are unable to provide information regarding the application status by telephone or e-mail.
May I appeal my admission decision or ask to have the decision explained?
The admission process is a well deliberated and thorough process. Each year we receive a large number of outstanding applications. Unfortunately, all of them do not qualify because of the limited number of available seats. The decision regarding admission is final.
